A useful guide
Which route is right for me?
Whether you are starting your career, returning to learning or looking to progress, understanding the differences can help you choose confidently.
Route 01
Apprenticeship route
An apprenticeship is normally funded by the government and/or your employer and includes a formal end-point assessment. The assessment differs by industry and may include:
- A workplace observation
- A presentation
- A professional discussion or interview
Apprenticeships commonly take 12–18 months depending on the level and standard. Your employer provides time during working hours for off-the-job training.
This route may suit you if you want structured support, workplace learning and a funded pathway into your chosen sector.
Route 02
Qualification or NVQ route
Check that the awarding body is recognised and that the qualification meets the requirements of the role you want. Ask whether workplace observations are required, who will carry them out and how assessment will work.
When you self-fund a qualification, you can:
- Progress at your own pace
- Learn without owing a return of service
- Choose a schedule that works around your other commitments
This route may suit you if you want flexibility, independence and control over your learning journey.

- How long will the course take?
- I have been out of learning for a while—what support is available?
- How will the course be assessed, and what happens if I fall behind?
- Can I complete the course in my own time and finish sooner?
- Does the course require observations, and how will these be carried out?
- How often will I speak to or see my tutor?
- If I do not pass an assignment, what support is offered? Is everything online?
